Jeron Johnson – S – 6th Season (1st with Chiefs)

The Kansas City Chiefs were left holding the bag when Husain Abdullah retired.  It was an unexpected outcome for the Chiefs (though some of us saw it coming).  The Chiefs went into scramble mode to add veteran safeties to help fill the void.  Jeron Johnson was a late veteran addition, and many fans thought he would take a roster spot.  However, that is not the case.

To be honest, I don’t know why Johnson was cut.  Sure, the Chiefs are set with starters Eric Berry and Ron Parker, and backup spots for Daniel Sorenson and Eric Murray.  That still left one opening in my eyes though, and Johnson seemed like a stable veteran to fill a specific role.

Will the Chiefs carry five safeties?  If so, is the fifth safety on the roster?  There is no real evidence to answer either of those questions.  Jeron Johnson seemed to have a good shot at the 53 man roster, especially after Stevie Brown was cut.  Now there is some real question as to what is happening here.

Johnson will likely find a home somewhere with another team.  Not that Jeron Johnson is a great player, but he has quality veteran experience that many teams could use.  It may come later in the season, but I do see Johnson ending up on a roster, potentially even the Chiefs depending on certain factors.
