Fantasy Football Top 15 Deep Sleepers for 2016 – Number 11: Wendell Smallwood

The Philadelphia Eagles running back, Wendell Smallwood, has serious upside. First off he’s young. The other two Eagles running backs are getting old and/or injury prone. He could see his role in the offense expand as the season progesses.

Smallwood dominated the college ranks last season as a member of the West Virginia Mountaineers. In 238 attempts, Smallwood stacked an amazing 1,519 rushing yards and nine touchdowns. He also tacked on 26 receptions for 160 yards.

The 5’11”  201 lbs. elusive back made the Big 12 teams look like high school teams when he faced them. Take a look at a few highlights from last season.

Smallwood could get a chance at being the lead back for the Eagles sometime this season. Ryan Mathews seems to get hurt each season. Darren Sproles is more of a third down receiving running back. He could see more time in a new offensive scheme but his age (33) could catch up to him with an injury or general wear and tear.

That’s where Smallwood comes in. He can play for Mathews if he gets hurt and possibly shine in a Doug Peterson lead offense. His talent is undeniable. If injuries occur, he should be the guy to fill in and possibly win the job over.
