Potential September Call Ups – Number 9: Tony Cruz

The Royals only have two catchers on their current roster and that’s obviously Salvador Perez and Drew Butera. Butera has gotten more playing time this year, but Tony Cruz should still be getting called up, just due to needing an extra catcher on the 40-man roster.

Cruz spent five seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals and was acquired by the Royals during the offseason last year. He’s appeared in three games (all when Perez was injured back in May/June) and struck out twice during that time.

The former Cardinal has been slashing .252/.333/.372 in 87 games with the Storm Chasers and could be brought up just to add catcher depth on the roster. Last year, Francisco Pena got a chance to start when the Royals put in the “hangover roster” the day after clinching the division.

While that probably won’t be an option this season, Cruz could certainly see time behind the dish during a blowout.

Next: Hopefully a future star
