KeiVarae Russell

The Chiefs needed secondary help for the 2016 season, and they added several pieces in the draft. One of those pieces was KeiVarae Russell out of Notre Dame, who the Chiefs grabbed in the third round.

People were excited about the Russell selection because it seemed like yet another steal for the Chiefs. Russell showed promise during his time with the Fighting Irish, and the Chiefs desperately need “promise” in their secondary this season after the loss of Sean Smith to the Raiders.

More than likely, Russell won’t be a starter right off the bat, but I could see him getting his time to shine.

As of now, Phillip Gaines would be my pick to win the starting opposing cornerback spot (opposite of Marcus Peters). Russell could be that surprise contender for the starting gig, however, and a good preseason (plus a poor one from Gaines) could be the difference for the former Notre Dame corner.

Gaines is coming off an ACL injury during the 2015 season, which could also give Russell the edge eventually.

Earlier on during the summer, Russell told the media that he was seeing time at the nickel and corner spot, according to Joel Thorman of Arrowhead Pride.

More than likely, Russell won’t be a starter right off the bat, but I could see him getting his time to shine. Even if he’s not a starter, the Chiefs will have a young secondary going down the stretch. This could prove to be painful this season, but could work out well for the Chiefs in the long run.
