Kansas City Chiefs: Star Player Returns Are Imminent

Over the course of less than 24 hours, Kansas City Chiefs fans were given good news regarding two of the most popular star players on the team.

The Kansas City Chiefs have had some big questions facing them this preseason.  Two of those big questions have been: “When will Eric Berry return to the team?” and “Will Jamaal Charles be ready for the start of the season?”  Well, Chiefs fans now know that the answer to both questions is a resounding “YES!”

Last night, Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole reported that his sources inside the Chiefs organization informed him that the team expects Eric Berry to make his return to the field soon.  That is a huge relief for the Chiefs as the safety position has certainly been in question with his absence.  Getting Berry back on the field will provide stability and leadership to a young group of defensive backs.

Then this morning, BJ Kissel of chiefs.com reported that star running back Jamaal Charles will be coming off the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list today.  Charles will also be practicing, though lightly, during today’s Training Camp session.  That is huge news for the Chiefs who are still built around the run game on offense.

This is big news at just the right time for the Kansas City Chiefs.  Despite a strong performance in their preseason opener, a number of fans and media people were a little down on the team after giving up a late Hail Mary to lose the game.  There has also been some doubt cast on some players at important positions, like Dee Ford.

So to get news of not one, but two, major returns right now is great for taking the focus off the negative stuff and rebuilding some confidence and excitement in the fan base.  This is also the kind of good news that can have a ripple effect through the rest of the roster as guys will have just that extra bit of confidence knowing that two of their top stars are returning.

Which of these stories is the biggest?  Well, call it like you see it, but my money is on Eric Berry.  There was far more uncertainty surrounding his return, and frankly the safety position is definitely in worse shape right now than the running back group.

Getting Eric Berry back also means the return of the “heart and soul of the team” as Alex Smith described him.  That is certainly true as we all remember how the organization rallied around Berry and his return to the field last season.

However, getting Jamaal Charles back is no small matter either.  Despite the emergence of Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware, there is no doubt the Chiefs wanted Charles on the field this year.  Simply put, Jamaal Charles is the most dangerous backfield weapon in the NFL because of his big play ability and talent as a receiver.  He will add a dynamic to the offense.

It’s hard to imagine a better start to the day for Kansas City Chiefs fans.  The expectations are high for this season, so getting these two players back (even if there is still some time before Berry actually returns) is huge.  Get excited Chiefs fans!
