Chiefs to Watch During Preseason – Number 2: Knile Davis

Knile Davis is someone I thought for sure was on his way out of Kansas City. The team demoted him behind Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware after Jamaal Charles went down last season, and they gave the aforementioned guys extensions, further putting that final nail in the coffin for one Knile Davis.

Instead, Davis still has a chance to stick around.

The main reason Davis is helping his stock with the team is due to his kick returning skills. The Chiefs have speedy Tyreek Hill to handle the punt returning duties, but kick returner is an area where they need someone. Davis could be that guy.

He might not be a starting running back or even the second string back, but Davis can be the Chiefs’ kick returner and he could be darn good at it.

Terez Paylor of The Kansas City Star wrote a nice piece on Davis working on his fumbling issues and said,

"If he can overcome his fumbling problem, it will almost certainly help his bid to make the team."

Fumbling has always been the concern with Knile Davis. He fumbled the Chiefs’ chances to win against the Patriots in the AFC Divisional Round last season and just showed that he never learned how to hold onto the football.

Davis is someone to watch this preseason because he’s not toast yet. He might not be a starting running back or even the second string back, but Davis can be the Chiefs’ kick returner and he could be darn good at it. We all saw the Wild Card kickoff where Davis took it to the house, and I personally wouldn’t mind seeing that a lot more.

Also, keep in mind that if Charles isn’t good to go to start the season, Davis could be kept on as insurance at running back as well.
