On the defensive side of the ball for the Kansas City Chiefs, chiefs.com official reporter Pete Sweeney is giving his player of the day award to Keivarae Russell.  “The Ferrari” (and that nickname needs to stick) had an impressive interception today against Aaron Murray, that he complimented with a pair of pass breakups.

That’s the kind of play that will get him reps at the #2 corner spot.  The Chiefs certainly have to be hoping that he will challenge Phillip Gaines in a starting role.  If the team can get at least one of their new young corners ready for significant playing time, it will be a huge boost from this draft class.

The rest of the secondary had a fairly solid day as well.  Marcus Peters and DJ White both had impressive plays in a pass-heavy practice session.  The Chiefs young secondary will certainly be tested a lot early on this season, so it is important for the coaching staff to get them prepared for that.

It’s tough for the rest of the defense to show up at the moment because they are playing without pads.  That means we don’t get to see the linemen and linebackers make big hits or really take on blockers.  With so little contact, these first few practices belong to the playmakers in the passing game.

However, that all changes today!  The pads come on, the hitting starts, and we will start to get a real glimpse of what this team is going to be in 2016.  So get your team gear on, run out to St Joe’s (or follow along on your computer), and dust off the grills and smokers…FOOTBALL IS BACK!!!
