Kansas City Chiefs Top Rookies To Watch – Number Five: Eric Murray – Cornerback/Safety

The Chiefs are certainly gambling on youth at cornerback, but maybe also at safety.  4th round pick Eric Murray played the corner spot in college, but so far the Chiefs have been working him out a lot at safety.

That versatility is what gives Murray an advantage over his counterparts.  He will get an opportunity to prove his worth at two different positions, but also in multiple roles.  Sometimes it is the ability to play a role rather than a position that will get a player more time on the field.

The Chiefs are a bit short handed at the safety position, which also plays to Murray’s advantage.  With the loss of Tyvon Branch and Husain Abdullah, the Chiefs have a big question at safety.  They have already looked to move cornerbacks to the spot with Marcus Cooper and Jamell Flemming.

Eric Murray will get his shot at corner, but it would appear that safety is his real shot at making an impact early.  If he can outplay either of the veteran players the Chiefs have converted to safety, Murray could be seeing a lot of the field this season.
