Kansas City Chiefs Top Rookies To Watch – Number One: Parker Ehinger – Guard

The Kansas City Chiefs have a big hole in their offensive line at left guard.  Currently, rookie Parker Ehinger stands as the top option to fill that hole.  The converted tackle from Cincinnati apparently won the job, though without pads, in OTAs last month.

Parker Ehinger is a quality player with a lot of tools.  However, as he is converting to guard, it should be expected that he has some stumbles along the way.  In fact, this is one position where the Chiefs may still be looking to bring in some outside help via trade or free agency.

Ehinger does project well at the left guard spot for the future, but the Chiefs need to be concerned with the here and now as well.  If Ehinger isn’t able to make a clear statement that he is ready to take on the role now, the Chiefs will need to entertain those outside options.

Hopefully the team has found a gem.  Many converted tackles do well at guard, so this isn’t an unreasonable situation.  However, with there not being much proven depth for the left guard spot, the pressure will be on for Ehinger to play well early on.

If the Chiefs can continue to get some value out of rookie players, we can expect this team to continue to be able to both win on the field and replace high priced veterans.  Those are the two things a team has to be able to do to sustain success.  This is franchise building.
