Kansas City Chiefs Top Position Battles – Number Five: Third Safety
The retirement of Husain Abdullah caught the Chiefs off guard (though it shouldn’t have). Now they need to find a way to fill in for a talented player at an important hybrid position. Abdullah was a rare find based on less than ordinary circumstances.
a. Stevie Brown – The offseason acquisition. He’s no Husain Abdullah, but he may do in a pinch. As of now, he’ll likely have the advantage as the veteran.
b. Marcus Cooper – Has been great so far in the offseason (though no pads yet). Is he an “in the box” safety? Probably not, but the Chiefs can get creative if they need to.
c. Jamell Flemming – Also working in at safety right now, this may be Flemming’s best bet for making the roster. However, taking snaps behind Cooper doesn’t bode well for him.
d. Eric Berry (watch out for) – The smart move may be to move Berry into Abdullah’s old role in Nickel packages and putting someone else (Cooper?) in the deep role. This could be that creative solution I alluded to.
e. Eric Murray (not likely) – Has gotten some work here, but that’s a big role for a rookie making a position change. In 2017? Maybe. But expecting much before then is probably too much.
