Kansas City Chiefs Top Position Battles – Number Seven: Backup Quarterback

Because this is Kansas City, and in Kansas City we love to talk about our backup quarterbacks.  With Chase Daniel now gone, this competition will take an even bigger stage than usual.

a.      Tyler Bray – Started the offseason as the top backup, and has regained the role after a brief trial run with Aaron Murray.  Bray has a top notch arm, and has gotten praise in the past for his development.  Can he put it together though?

b.      Aaron Murray – At this point he is probably fighting for his future in the NFL.  The fact the Chiefs gave the #2 job back to Tyler Bray at the end of OTAs is not an insignificant fact.  Murray’s best value to the team may be as trade bait.

c.      Kevin Hogan – He’ll be on this roster in some fashion.  Everything Andy Reid loves in a quarterback, but needs to get some work in.  There was a lot of praise for his work in OTAs as he made some impressive plays.

d.      Free Agent (watch out for) – A couple of guys with Eagles and Packers connections are on the market.  If this is a tight race for the wrong reasons, Dorsey may go get some help.  I would put this low on the priority list, but it will remain an option until someone secures the job.

e.      All The Above (not likely) – Some folks are projecting the Chiefs will keep all of Bray, Murray, and Hogan.  I don’t see it.  This is decision making time for the front office.  No matter how this plays out, you can expect a significant portion of Chiefs Kingdom to be upset…we do love our backup quarterbacks in KC.
