Kansas City Chiefs Top Position Battles – Number Eight: Back-up Tight End

The Chiefs made a big move in locking up their start tight end this offseason.  But a lot of questions remain at the position after Travis Kelce.  Someone will have to step up this year or else the Chiefs are going to have to make a big change to this group in 2017.  But the roster isn’t without potential and talent.  We just need to see them put it together.

a.      Demetrius Harris – The progression has been slow, but Harris finally showed that he could put his basketball skills to use on the football field.  If he continues to grow as a player, it’s hard to project just what his ceiling is.

b.      James O’Shaughnessy – This was an important offseason for him.  Hopefully, he’s worked hard on his blocking.  Until he can earn the #2 spot behind Kelce, his job will always be on the line.

c.      Brian Parker – Kind of an outside shot here, but Parker has flashed some talent.  If his blocking is up to par, that could be his best bet for making a team that loves to run the ball.

d.      Ross Travis (watch out for) – With there being no clear distinction between the other options, Ross is playing with nothing to lose.  Can make him dangerous.

e.      Free Agent (not likely) – I was hollering for a veteran acquisition all offseason, but I’m not seeing it as a likely option now.
