Best Tight Ends in Chiefs History – Number 1: Tony Gonzalez

Well, duh. If you expected to see anyone here other than Tony Gonzalez, then re-think your Chiefs fandom please.

The Kansas City Chiefs selected Tony Gonzalez with the 13th overall pick in the 1997 NFL Draft and he only went on to become not only the best tight end in team history, but potentially the best PLAYER in Chiefs history.

What made Gonzalez so great was that he was a class act on and off the field. Not only did he go and play his hardest week in and week out, but he was always smiling even when the team was going through rough times.

Gonzalez spent a whopping 12 years as a member of the Chiefs organization, and 17 years in the league total. He is still the team’s leader in receiving yards, and it’s not even close.

Gonzalez had 10,940 yards while a member of the Chiefs and the next closest to his record is Otis Taylor with 7,306. Yeah, I don’t think Tony has to worry about that record being broken for awhile.

He finished his Kansas City career with 916 receptions for 10,940 yards and 76 touchdowns. He made it to the Pro Bowl ten times as a member of the Chiefs and was named First-Team All-Pro five times as a Chief.

Eventually, however, Gonzalez had had enough of being on a non-playoff team. He requested a trade and was granted his wish, joining the Atlanta Falcons in 2009.

Gonzalez finally got to experience a playoff winning atmosphere, winning his first playoff game of his career during the 2012 season, a year in which his old team went 2-14 and had the worst record in the league.

Gonzalez is first all-time in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns among tight ends, which is extremely impressive. He’ll always be a legend to Chiefs fans and is a household name everywhere.

It’ll take an amazing talent to knock Tony Gonzalez from the top of this list. Truly one of the best players of all-time, not just for the Chiefs, but for any organization. He’s a lock to make the Hall of Fame.
