Kansas City Chiefs: 2016 NFL Draft Grade Card
My personal favorite pick of the 2016 NFL Draft for the Kansas City Chiefs was in the fifth round and it was Kevin Hogan out of Stanford. Very rarely do I see a pick scroll across the screen and cheer, but I did with this one (true story).
Hogan is a great pick for Kansas City. First of all, he’s not an immediate starter. He’s honestly probably not even going to be a starter in the next two or three years, but that’s okay! Alex Smith is the unquestioned starter for the KC Chiefs for at least the next three or four years.
That means Hogan can sit behind Smith and learn the system. He’s the winningest quarterback in Stanford Cardinal history and is big and mobile. Hogan is very coachable and he has the opportunity to backup Smith for the next few years before hopefully getting a shot at starting for the Chiefs years down the road.
This pick got an A- from me because I loved the selection, but Hogan has difficulties with throwing the ball deep, something that fans are hard on Alex Smith for. I also wouldn’t have minded seeing Kansas City go with a quarterback in one of the earlier rounds, but with them being beaten out for Paxton Lynch and Connor Cook, Kevin Hogan was a nice option.
