KC Chiefs: Ten Best Sixth Round Draft Picks of All-Time
Best Sixth Round Selections of All-Time – Number 3: Jimmy Wilkerson (Chiefs defensive end from 2003-2007)
The KC Chiefs selected Jimmy Wilkerson in the sixth round of the 2003 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma and he would end up spending five years in Kansas City.
Wilkerson only started five games during his time as a Chief, but he appeared in 72 games during that span. He recorded 77 tackles and only one sack.
After five years with the Chiefs, Wilkerson joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and saw a decent amount of success there in two years. He had a whopping 11 sacks in two seasons (five in 2008 and six in 2009) and started all but one game in the 2009 season.
Wilkerson would finish his career playing for both the Saints and Seahawks, but was out of the league after the 2011 season.
He might not have had mind-blowing stats with Kansas City, but Wilkerson spent five years with the team and went on to have decent seasons elsewhere. That’s what puts him at number three on this list.
Best Sixth Round Selections of All-Time – Number 2: Robb Thomas (Chiefs wide receiver from 1989-1991)
The second-best sixth-round draft choice by the KC Chiefs was Robb Thomas (not to be confused with the lead singer of Matchbox Twenty or the TV producer), whom the team drafted 143rd overall in the 1989 NFL Draft.
Thomas only spent three years in Kansas City, but he had quite the production for being a sixth-rounder. He started in 25 games and appeared in 39 total. He racked up 92 receptions for 1,098 yards in three seasons and also made seven trips to the end zone.
Thomas spent an impressive ten seasons in the NFL (not bad for a sixth-round selection) and unlike most sixth-rounders, spent most of his time with the same team(s). He was with Kansas City for three seasons, Seattle for four, and then finished his career in Tampa Bay, where he spent three years.
While not the biggest name in the Chiefs’ books, Thomas proved that a sixth-round draft choice can go on to spend a decade in the NFL (he was taken over a decade before Tom Brady would later prove this point).
