Wilmington Blue Rocks

The Wilmington Blue Rocks also posted a losing record in their third week by going 3-5. It’s certainly not the fault of Ryan O’Hearn.

Ryan O’Hearn, the KC Royals’ 13th ranked prospect, has had a terrific start to the 2016 season. He’s 26-67 on the year with a .388 batting average on the year. He has six doubles and six home runs on the season and he’s the obvious offensive leader for the Blue Rocks.

Here’s what MLB.com has to say about the hard hitting first baseman:

"O’Hearn has well above-average raw power and now concentrates on making the most of it. He’s a legitimate power threat who also contributes walks, though he may never hit for a high average. His left-handed swing is long and he gets pull-happy, which has resulted in 200 strikeouts to go with his 40 homers in his first 191 pro games."

On the mound, the Blue Rocks have gotten good performances on the year from three pitchers in particular.

Pedro Fernandez, the Royals 21st ranked prospect, is 2-0 on the year with a 1.76 ERA in 15.1 innings pitched. He has 16 strikeouts compared to six walks in those innings.

Josh Staumont, the Royals’ 18th ranked prospect, gave up one run in 5.1 innings of work this week while earning the loss. He struck out nine and walked only one. On the season, he’s got 23 strikeouts in 13 innings of work. He does have seven walks so far, but if his control comes around he could turn into a great pick for the Royals.

Derek Gordon has also had a fine start to the season. Alex’s little brother has now appeared in five games in relief and has 12 strikeouts in 10.2 innings of work.
