Best Fifth Round Picks of All-Time – Number 2: Jerry Mays (Chiefs defensive end/tackle from 1961-1970)

The Kansas City Chiefs’ second-best fifth-round pick of all time came when the team was still the Dallas Texans. The Texans selected Jerry Mays in the 1961 AFL Draft with the 38th overall pick (rounds were shorter then) out of SMU.

More from Chiefs All-Time Lists

Mays spent his entire career in the Chiefs organization and earned seven Pro Bowl nominations in ten seasons (1962, 1964-1968, 1970). Mays played in every game and was a member of the 1969 KC Chiefs Super Bowl-winning team. He was a captain in both Super Bowls for the Chiefs.

Along with his seven Pro Bowls, Mays was named First-Team All-Pro twice (1965 and 1966) and was inducted into the Chiefs Hall of Fame in 1972.

Mays retired from the NFL after the 1970 season and went on to work for his father’s construction company. Sadly, he passed away in 1994.

Sure, the draft rounds used to be much shorter so the talented players were still available several rounds deep, but Jerry Mays is still the organization’s second best fifth round pick of all time. He was actually recently dethroned by who the number one entry is on this list.
