Best Fifth Round Picks of All-Time – Number 6: Carlos Carson (Chiefs wide receiver from 1980-1989)

While not as good of an overall receiver as Joe Horn in the NFL, Carlos Carson beat him out on this list for the simple fact that he spent a decade of his career in Kansas City.

Carson, the Chiefs’ fifth round pick in the 1980 NFL Draft out of LSU, started 91 games for the Chiefs over ten years. He had 352 receptions for 6,360 yards and 33 touchdowns during that time. All of these stats are tremendous considering that Carson was the team’s 114th overall pick in 1980.

After ten seasons as a Chief, Carson ended his NFL career as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles, where he played six games in 1989 (he played seven for the Chiefs before he was with Philadelphia).

Carlos Carson is not a well-known name at all by Chiefs fans, but he spent a long time in Kansas City and went on to have a nice career despite being drafted in the fifth round.

Best Fifth Round Picks of All-Time – Number 5: Scott Fujita (Chiefs linebacker from 2002-2004)

In 2002, the Kansas City Chiefs selected Scott Fujita out of California in round five, and he became yet another guy on this list to make his name while with the New Orleans Saints.

Fujita played for Kansas City for only three seasons, but during that time he started 41 games and played in 48 total. He made an impact with the Chiefs right off the bat, starting in nine games his rookie year and became a full-time starter from then on.

He finished his Chiefs career with 225 tackles and nine and a half sacks. He also defended seven passes and had one interception. The 2004 season saw Fujita lead the team in tackles with 112 and he looked to be a steal in the draft for the Chiefs.

When the Chiefs selected Derrick Johnson in the first round in the 2005 NFL Draft, however, Fujita asked to be traded and got his wish. He was traded to Dallas, where he only spent a year before signing with the Saints. New Orleans is where Fujita’s career really took off. He played in New Orleans for four years and was on the 2009 Super Bowl winning Saints squad.

Scott Fujita was one hell of a steal for the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2002 NFL Draft and even though his best years were played in another uniform, he was still one of the Chiefs’ best fifth round draft picks.
