A Swing And A Miss

The KC Royals’ bats are pretty cold in the early goings as they’re slashing only .233/.289/.387. Last season they batted .269/.322/.412 and started the season on fire. This year they’ve found ways to win without the hot bats.

Last season the Royals struck out 973 times in 6,116 plate appearances. They also drew a walk 383 times and were hit by a pitch on 77 occasions.

This season, the Royals are on pace for 5,832 plate appearances. They’re also on pace to strikeout 1,328 times and draw only 170 free passes. They haven’t been hit by a pitch yet this season which is welcome news to Royals’ fans.

The higher strikeout rate is a little surprising as the Royals are a high-contact team, but things will even themselves out over the course of the season. The team may have just started out in a little bit of a slump.

Last year’s third-place finisher in the MVP voting, remember the MVP wasn’t on this team because we beat them, has already struck out seven times in only 21 plate appearances. That puts Lorenzo Cain on pace to strikeout 199 times if he gets the 604 plate appearances he got last season. That’s over 100 more on the season.

Don’t read too much into this. Team’s go cold from time to time. Be glad the Royals earned four wins during a time when their bats weren’t doing much.
