KC Chiefs Best Fourth Round Picks of All-Time | Number 5: Matt Herkenhoff

Much like Harris, Matt Herkenhoff chose not to enter the NFL after being drafted by the KC Chiefs, but unlike Harris, Herkenhoff did not play in the CFL either.

Instead, Herkenhoff joined the World Football League’s New York Stars in the league’s first ever season.

Herkenhoff played just one season with the Stars, and even stayed with the team after moving to Charlotte, North Carolina.

Although Herkenhoff’s position is not the flashiest, his contributions to the franchise are unquestionable.

The following season, the WFL folded in its second season of existence.

Before this happened, Herkenhoff left the WFL to sign with the KC Chiefs, where he did not see the field until 1976 due to ankle injuries.

From 1976 until the end of his career in 1985, Herkenhoff was a dependable and consistent starter at the left tackle position.

In 1984, even at the end of his career, Herkenhoff was a part of an offensive line that only allowed 33 sacks that season. That season, this line set a KC Chiefs record with a sack ratio of one sack allowed per 19 pass attempts. Although Herkenhoff’s position is not the flashiest, his contributions to the franchise are unquestionable.

Trying to find a reliable left tackle nowadays is an extremely difficult task. Eric Fisher is improving, but is nowhere near as dependable of a player as Herkenhoff. The fact he was able to sustain this protection over the course of 10 seasons is extremely impressive.
