KC Chiefs Best Fourth Round Picks of All-Time | Number 8: Monty Beisel

After attending Douglass High School, Monty Beisel opted not to play out of state by enrolling in Kansas State. Beisel was then drafted by the KC Chiefs in 2001 where he spent his first four seasons in the NFL.

In his fourth season, Beisel received his only nine starts with the team. Over the course of these four seasons with the KC Chiefs, Beisel recorded 92 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 55 games and just nine starts.

After spending the 2005 season with the New England Patriots, Beisel joined the Arizona Cardinals. In his three and a half year stretch with the Cardinals, his 2008 season was the most noteworthy. In week 6 of that season, Beisel made his place in NFL history. Only about a minute into overtime against the Dallas Cowboys, Beisel blocked a punt by Matt McBriar and returned it for a touchdown.

Over the course of his career, he recorded 191 tackles and four and a half sacks when all was said and done.

Beisel became the first player in NFL history to score a game-winning touchdown in overtime when he sealed the Cardinals 30-24 victory.

Later that season, the Cardinals would make it all the way to the Super Bowl to face off against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

After losing 27-23 in this game, Beisel left Arizona to sign again with the Chiefs. Beisel was released after just playing three games with the Chiefs, and signed again with the Cardinals two months later in November. After finishing out the 2009 season with the Cardinals, Beisel’s release in the 2010 offseason marked his retirement.

Beisel is the second player on this list to exceed 100 games played, with a total of 119. Over the course of his career, he recorded 191 tackles and four and a half sacks when all was said and done. On top of being a first in NFL history and winning an NFC Championship game, his career wasn’t too shabby.
