Kansas City Chiefs Add Depth In 2016 Mock Draft
By Scott Dillon
Round 2 – Pick 28: Vernon Butler, Defensive Tackle (Louisiana Tech)
This pick may not actually be a depth piece for the Chiefs and is probably actually a position of need. They did re-sign Jaye Howard, but so far Mike DeVito is a free agent and hasn’t been signed yet.
There is still a chance that a reunion could happen between the Chiefs and DeVito, but they’ve already pushed their cap room to it’s limits and seeking out a draft pick may prove to be both a cheaper and more long-term solution.

The Chiefs could probably plug Vernon Butler in from day one and see him start to make an impact. It always seems to take defensive tackles a little while to catch up to the actual NFL game speed so he could experience some growing pains.
NFL.com had this to say about the defensive tackle:
"Athletic interior lineman with long arms and outstanding athleticism that allows him to work on offensive linemen with a combination of power and quickness. Butler has a raw but diverse skillset as a pass rusher that should excite NFL evaluators who see the potential of what he can be with more coaching and experience. With his effort and defensive ball awareness, his ceiling appears to be high with a chance to become a high-level starter for an odd or even front defense."
Vernon Butler Combine Results
- 40-Yard Dash: 5.33 seconds
- Bench Press: 26 reps
- Vertical Jump: 29.5 inches
- Broad Jump: 104 inches
- Three-Cone Drill: 7.82 seconds
- 20-Yard Shuttle: 4.76 seconds
Ultimately, Butler figures to be a very versatile and solid option on the defensive front. He’s recorded 104 total tackles in his last two seasons and has 22.5 tackles for a loss during that span. If his ability to get to the backfield translates to the NFL, the Chiefs could have a very stout defensive front in 2016.
