Best Second Round Picks of All-Time – Number 11: Joe Delaney (Chiefs running back in 1981 and 1982)

When one hears the name Joe Delaney, they immediately think “Hero”. It’s so true and despite only spending two seasons in the NFL, Joe Delaney is easily one of the Chiefs’ best second round draft picks ever.

Delaney, a standout running back at Northwestern State of Louisiana, was Kansas City’s 41st overall pick in the 1981 NFL Draft. He did not disappoint during his two years as a Chief.

Delaney rushed for 1,121 yards as a rookie in 1981 and had three touchdowns to his name. His longest run was for 82 yards. Delaney also had nearly 250 yards receiving that year and was the shining star on the team during his ten starts.

Overall, Delaney ran for just over 1,500 yards and had three trips to the end zone. He made it to the Pro Bowl in 1981 and was also named the UPI AFC Rookie of the Year as well.

Sadly, Joe Delaney’s life was cut short. In the summer of 1983, Delaney dove into a water hole to save three children who were drowning. Delaney couldn’t swim, but did what he could to save the kids and gave his life to save theirs. It’s so amazing that someone could be as unselfish as Delaney was that day.

Since his death, Joe Delaney’s number was retired (37) and he was inducted into the Chiefs Hall of Fame in 2004. His name is in the Ring of Honor at Arrowhead Stadium, where his legend will live on forever.

Rest in peace, Joe Delaney.
