KC Chiefs Defensive Needs First 2016 NFL Mock Draft
By Bobby Miller
Round 1 | Pick 28: Mackensie Alexander
Following the loss of Sean Smith to the Oakland Raiders, the KC Chiefs entered this draft needing to address the talent void at cornerback.
Marcus Peters has definitely shown promise, but players like Marcus Cooper, Jamell Fleming, and Steven Nelson aren’t anything more than solid nickels and dimes.
As a result, the KC Chiefs had to draft a player who could hang with legitimate receivers in one-on-one situations. This is where Alexander comes in.
NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein had this to say about Alexander. “He was consistently sticky in man coverage and played with the instincts and confidence needed from a true cover corner,” Zierlein said.
“Alexander’s confidence may border on cockiness at times, but that also seems to feed his competitive fire.” Zierlein also added, “Plays stronger than his size and his demeanor fires up his teammates.”
At 5’10, 190 lbs., Alexander is a little undersized, but not extremely small. Plus, Tyrann Mathieu is one of the best defensive backs in the league while being generously listed as 5’9.
In addition, Alexander’s “competitive fire” could help replace the juice drained from the secondary when their ‘hype man‘ left for Oakland.
