The KC Royals and their players have described each other as family. It seems that family feeling extends beyond the team and into the fans.

The KC Royals have had a love affair with their fans ever since that epic Wild Card game in 2014. They’ve said many times that they couldn’t have done it without the fans and while cliche, it doesn’t appear to be just lip service.

The Royals players have been great about giving back to the community before they became known for exciting comebacks in the playoffs. Overall, they’re just a good group of guys.

While they have long been givers to the community, things intensified when the Royals swept the Angels in the 2014 ALDS. The city was ready to party and the Royals partied alongside the fans. Not only did they join together in celebration, Eric Hosmer picked up the tab for some of the fans.

The Royals fought through the playoffs all the way to the World Series that year. They dropped a heartbreaker to the Giants in seven games, but the fans seemed different.

While it was devastating, something changed in all KC Royals fans in 2014. There was no article in the KC Star about how disappointing the loss was. Everyone, players and fans alike, seemed grateful to have each other.

“Thank you, Royals.” It’s not common to see disappointment met with such a positive reaction, especially in sports. Three little words made up this chant and deep down, every Royals’ fan can’t help but feel grateful for what’s happened.

Next: Onto 2015!
