Best First Round Picks by the Chiefs – Number 8: Neil Smith (Chiefs defensive end from 1988-1996)

One of the best to ever don a Chiefs uniform was the team’s first round pick in 1988, Neil Smith. Kansas City had made it known that they had planned to take Smith with the third overall pick, but when Detroit threatened to take him, the Chiefs moved up and got their guy.

Smith went on to record 624 tackles and 85 and a half sacks in six seasons with the Chiefs. He was a five-time Pro Bowler with the Chiefs (1991-1995), was named First-Team All-Pro in 1993, and Second-Team All-Pro in 1992 and 1995.

The only real big knock on Smith was that he ended up playing with the Denver Broncos after his time in Kansas City, which didn’t set well with the fans here.

Not only did Smith join the Broncos, he was on their team for both of their Super Bowl seasons in the late 90s, which only angered Chiefs fans more.

All in all, Smith was forgiven, and is a legend here in Kansas City. He was co-owner of the Kansas City Brigade during its existence and frequently appears on 610 Sports Radio, always bringing a special guest on with him.

Neil Smith was elected into the Chiefs Hall of Fame in 2006.
