KC Chiefs: 15 Best First Round Draft Picks of All-Time
Best First Round Picks by the Chiefs – Number 13: Eric Berry (Chiefs safety from 2010-2018)
Eric Berry was the Chiefs’ fifth overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft and joined the team after they had been coming off of three straight losing seasons.
Berry made a big impact right away for Kansas City, starting all 16 games for the Chiefs and recording four interceptions. Berry had 72 tackles his rookie year and also had ten defended passes. He recorded two sacks as well, and made it to his first Pro Bowl.
Berry went on to continue to have an impressive Chiefs career. He missed all but one game of the 2011 season to an ACL tear, but came back strong the next two seasons, making it to the Pro Bowls both years.
The part that cements Eric Berry’s legacy as a Chief was in 2014 when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The diagnosis forced Berry to miss the remainder of the 2014 season, and his future as a Chief and in the NFL was unclear.
When 2015 training camp opened up, however, Berry was there and ready to compete. He ended up starting all but one game and making it to his fourth Pro Bowl in just six seasons.
After a strong 2016 where Berry essentially won two games for the Chiefs, he was given a huge contract, but failed to live up to it. After signing the deal, Berry went on to play in just three regular season games in 2017 and 2018 combined. He was released after the 2018 season and spent the 2019 season out of football.
