Best First Round Picks by the Chiefs – Number 14: E.J. Holub (Texans/Chiefs center/linebacker from 1961-1970)

Back when the KC Chiefs were still the Dallas Texans, they took E.J. Holub with their first draft pick in the 1961 AFL Draft. He was also drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the second round on the NFL side, but opted to play for the Texans.

Holub actually played two different positions for the Texans and Chiefs, starting at both center and at linebacker. He played in 126 total games during his time with the franchise and was with the team for ten years.

Holub had nine interceptions as a linebacker and was a five-time AFL All-Star (now known as the Pro Bowl). He was named an AFL All-Star from 1961-1966 and was also All-Pro in 1962 and 1963.

What derailed Holub’s career was injuries. He had a knee injuries throughout his career, and once the Chiefs took Jack Rudnay in the 1969 NFL Draft, Holub decided to retire shortly after.

E.J. Holub was inducted into the Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame in 1976.
