KC Chiefs: 15 Best First Round Draft Picks of All-Time
Best First Round Picks by the Chiefs – Number 3: Buck Buchanan (Chiefs defense tackle from 1963-1975)
In 1963, the Dallas Texans had the first overall pick in the AFL Draft, thanks to the Oakland Raiders, and took Buck Buchanan out of Grambling. Buchanan was selected in the 19th round in the NFL Draft, but opted to play for the Texans in the AFL instead.
Buchanan was not only one of the Kansas City Chiefs’ best first-round picks of all time, he’s one of the organization’s best players ever. Buchanan played in 183 games over 13 seasons and played in all 14 games every season.
Buchanan was a two-time AFL Champion and was a Super Bowl Champion in 1969. He was also a six-time AFL All-Star (1964-1969) and a two-time Pro Bowler (1970 and 1971).
Buchanan was simply one of the best ever to don a Texans/Chiefs uniform. He spent his entire career with the franchise and set the bar high every year. There are very few defensive players for the Chiefs who have been anywhere near his skill set.
Buchanan was put into the Chiefs Hall of Fame in 1983 and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1990. His number (86) is one of the few to be retired by the Chiefs organization.
