Round 7 – Pick 28: Taveze Calhoun, Cornerback (Mississippi State)

Consider the Kansas City Chiefs’ pick of Taveze Calhoun to be a long shot at best. The Chiefs did lose Sean Smith to free agency, so cornerback is a position of need. They also have Steven Nelson and Phillip Gaines waiting in the wings for a shot at the starting position opposite Marcus Peters.

Calhoun does have six interceptions in his time in college. That’s underwhelming for a cornerback with four years of experience.

Taveze Calhoun Combine Results

  • 40 Yard Dash: 4.58 seconds
  • Bench Press: 14 reps
  • Vertical Jump: 33.5 inches

NFL.com had this to say about the long shot cornerback from Mississippi State:

"High-character leader whose overall intelligence translates into positive plays on the field. Calhoun doesn’t have good deep speed but finds ways to cover up his speed deficiency while still making plays on the throws underneath. A failure to run well would be a huge concern because he lacks the physicality as a tackler to be a full-time zone corner. Late Day 3 draft pick or camp invite might be his door into the NFL."

If there is one thing he has going for him it’s his character. It’s not every player that comes out of the draft that has a good head on their shoulders. Knowing that he’s not likely to cause any issues in camp and would perhaps accept a practice squad role could be appealing with the final pick in the draft.
