Round 5 – Pick 23: Kevin Hogan, Quarterback (Stanford)

The Kansas City Chiefs recently lost their backup quarterback when Chase Daniel followed Doug Pederson to Philadelphia. While he was a great backup, it would look a lot better to have less money sitting on the bench.

Kevin Hogan will probably never profile as an NFL starter, but he does possess tools to be an adequate backup. That’s really all the Chiefs need at this point. They don’t need someone who can put the team on their shoulders and win a game. They need someone who can manage the game and not make too many mistakes.

Here’s what NFL.com has to say about the Stanford product:

"Hogan has the size, mobility and quarterback’s demeanor that could interest a team on the third day of the draft. He doesn?t have the arm that many teams look for and his intermediate and deep accuracy still need work. Hogan will need time and coaching to try and improve his mechanics and footwork if he wants to have a shot to be an NFL backup."

Kevin Hogan is a mobile quarterback who averaged four yards per carry in his college career. He also scored 15 touchdowns on the ground. Alex Smith had very similar numbers in his college career.

They are both good at completing short passes and can extend plays with their legs. If Hogan can learn how to parlay his skill set into a professional career, it’s behind Alex Smith.
