KC Royals: Projecting 2016 Opening Day Roster
By Scott Dillon
The KC Royals have trimmed their Spring Training roster making the opening day 25-man roster look more clear. Who’s going to make the cut?
The KC Royals made a significant number of cuts over the last couple days as they try to round out their 40-man roster. They’ll need to select their opening day 25-man roster in only a couple of weeks. Who projects to be in the dugout on April 3rd?
Among the cuts were some pretty significant names. Some of these players were thought to at least have an outside shot at making the opening day roster, but it appears unlikely at this time.
Players like Brett Eibner, Jose Martinez, Kyle Zimmer, and Miguel Almonte were all optioned to Triple-A. Cheslor Cuthbert was also sent to Triple-A but that move came later in the day. See a full list of those moves here.
While there is still plenty of time left in Spring Training for things to change, the position battles are now fully under way. Spots are up for grabs in nearly every facet of the game. The rotation still needs to be filled out, second base and right field are still up for grabs, and bullpen and backup spots exist also.
While it may be a little premature to be filling out an opening day 25-man roster, it’s still fun to speculate. It’ll be fun to reflect back and see how close this article was to being accurate.
Let’s break down the position battles and see what players are lobbying for a spot this season.
