Fifth: 2014 Wild Card Game: Tying Run

The 2014 AL Wild Card game was a roller coaster of emotions. Fans watched their team face off against career Royal killer, Jon Lester, and hoped to see meaningful October baseball for the first time in years. They got to see it that night as the game went into extra innings and became an instant classic.

What started as a back and forth game, soon turned into an ugly game for the team. The fans were desperate to see any kind of playoff baseball and refused to leave in spite of their team trailing.

Yordano Ventura, who’s already had problems keeping his emotions in check, could have been ruined after his outing in that game. Instead, the Royals rallied and washed away any wrongdoing.

Eric Hosmer was a huge part of that comeback. It was in this game that he made his foray into risky attempts to score. As long as he keeps putting on pressure and the results keep yielding Royal results, then damn the consequences.

“Are you believing this?” is one of the comments that followed and it’s very fitting. Hosmer’s judgment on that play led to the game-tying run. It may seem insignificant, but had the ball been hit any harder, or stayed in the air a little longer, this play may never have happened. It would have been difficult, but a slight change in the direction of the ball could’ve resulted in a much different result.

While Hosmer has had some big plays in his career, this one has to be among his best moments. It helped prove that while the Royals may be down, they should never be counted out.
