The Ugly: Losing Sean Smith

This one would have hurt enough had Sean Smith just left, but he had to make it worse by signing with the hated Oakland Raiders. Even though most Chiefs fans were anticipating Smith going to the black hole, it still stings a lot.

Smith will now be squaring off against the Chiefs twice a year, and he certainly has the upper hand. Smith would face Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith (both have the last name Smith and went to Utah, kind of funny actually) in practice and knows how to cover him.

What sucks even more about this deal is that Smith ended up signing a completely reasonable deal. Most of the time when teams have to depart with players, we can say, “For that price, they can have him!” Not in this case though.

Sean Smith inked a four-year deal worth $40 million in Oakland, which comes down to $10 million a year. The Chiefs totally could have managed this.

Kansas City seemed to be preparing for Smith’s eventual departure. They drafted Phillip Gaines in the third round of the 2014 NFL Draft and selected Marcus Peters with the 18th overall pick last year. Not to mention, they took Steven Nelson in the third round last year as well.

Hopefully, Gaines is ready to fill Smith’s shoes, because this Chiefs secondary is losing a hell of a cornerback.
