Kansas City Royals: All-Time Worst Defenders
By Scott Dillon
Third Base: Mark Teahen
Total TZ: -50 over 3,027.0 innings
TZ per 1,500 innings: -24.8
Mark Teahen was not just bad defensively at third base, his TZ per 1500 innings is the worst of any Royal to ever play 1500 innings or more at one position. Bottom line: he wasn’t good.
Mark Teahen was one of the players brought in to Kansas City when the Carlos Gonzalez trade went down in 2004. One of the other players to come to the Royals in that deal was the first player on this list, John Buck.
Mark Teahen, you guessed it, was another player who’s bat kept him in the lineup. He may have been the Royals’ best hitter for a few of his seasons from 2005-2009.
While he struggled during his rookie season in 2005, Teahen posted a .295 average with 18 home runs in 2006. He would be moved into right field in 2007 for some prospect by the name of Alex Gordon (Who would be moved into the outfield himself someday).
Teahen wasn’t good in right field either, but he wasn’t the worst right fielder the Royals ever had defensively. In right field, Teahen averaged -11.5 TZ per 1,500 innings. Again, while he wasn’t a good defender, that doesn’t mean he was a bad player. It’s just another indication of how much different the Royals were in the mid to late 2000’s than they are now.
