Round 4 – Pick 28: Shawn Oakman, Defensive End (Baylor)

The KC Chiefs take a flyer on a boom or bust pick in Shawn Oakman in this round.

While Oakman isn’t considered to be a pass rusher, he did have 11 sacks in his junior season. He only recorded 4.5 sacks last year, but still had double digit tackles for a loss.

He actually has 46.5 tackles for a loss in his career and only 128 total tackles. His ability to stop people in the backfield is certainly appealing.

See what NFL.Com has to say about Shawn Oakman:

"While Oakman was the cause celebre of national media types after images of his tremendous upper body build emerged, he has always been more project than polish as a defensive end. While Oakman has limited upfield burst and no counters as a pass rusher, his length and ability to set a hard edge are no joke and his traits should get him drafted much higher than his tape warrants."

Even if Oakman isn’t great in the pass rush game, pairing up with Justin Houston on the edge could be an advantage. If people are forced to focus on Houston, it could give Oakman the easier match-up.

Shawn Oakman Combine Results

  • 40 Yard Dash: 4.96 seconds
  • Bench Press: 23 reps
  • Broad Jump: 123 inches
  • Three Cone Drill: 7.53 seconds
  • 20 Yard Shuttle: 4.56 seconds
  • Vertical Jump: 32 inches

While Oakman finished in the middle of the pack in most of these categories, he was a top two performer in the broad jump. He’s a middle-round pick at best, but he appears to have some upside.

If his strength is against the run, he could also help fill a hole if Jaye Howard or Mike DeVito depart. Devito especially, is above average against the run.

The Chiefs have gone with the impressive physical force before when they drafted Dontari Poe. So far, that pick has proven to be a good one. Oakman, like Sheldon Day, could benefit from the tutelage of Poe when joining the Chiefs. He could teach Oakman how to use his size to his advantage.
