KC Chiefs Select Local Product In 2016 NFL Mock Draft
By Scott Dillon
Round 3 – Pick 28: Sheldon Day, Defensive Tackle (Notre Dame)
The KC Chiefs have two defensive linemen entering free agency. Both Mike DeVito and Jaye Howard could be departing this off-season making defensive tackle a position of need.
Sheldon Day may fall to the third round due to concerns about his size, but he’s a maximum effort kind of player and could benefit alongside the likes of Dontare Poe.
Here’s what NFL.com has to say about Sheldon Day:
"Appears to be a man without a true position, but good football players find spots on rosters and snaps on the field. Day makes up for his undersized frame with quick hands, impressive lateral movement and effort level that is rarely matched. There will be teams who scratch him off their draft board due to size and scheme concerns, but his ability to rush the passer from the interior will be sought out by others who recognize his potential value."
Day had four sacks for Notre Dame last season, but finished his year with 15.5 tackles for a loss. That was more than double his output from a year prior, so his arrow may be trending up.
Sheldon Day Combine Results
- 40 Yard Dash: 5.07 seconds
- Bench Press: 21 reps
- Broad Jump: 102 inches
- Three Cone Drill: 7.44 seconds
- 20 Yard Shuttle: 4.5 seconds
- Vertical Jump: 30 inches
Sheldon Day didn’t finish near the top in any of his combine performances, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. This is one of the deeper draft classes for defensive tackles, so if the Chiefs don’t take Day, they could still find value somewhere else.
Even if the Chiefs re-sign one of the two defensive linemen set to depart via free agency, depth is never a bad thing.
