Kansas City Royals: Top 15 Pitchers In Losses All-Time
By Scott Dillon
Kansas City Royals All-Time Loss Leaders – Number 14: Jeff Suppan (51 Losses)
No pitcher on this list may be a better example of just how unimportant the win/loss category is when it comes to defining a pitcher’s true value.
Jeff Suppan posted a 4.73 ERA across four full season for the Royals from 1999-2002. He still managed to win 39 games in that stretch of time, but he also pitched poorly enough to find his way onto this Royals’ All-time list.
Suppan’s career wasn’t all bad. He does own a career ERA of 4.70 and his overall record is 140-146. He also managed to pitch in the Major Leagues for parts of 17 seasons. That’s a pretty impressive feat.
While he was never able to lead the Royals to the promised land, he did play a big role in the 2006 Cardinals’ success. Suppan earned NLCS MVP honors in 2006 when he pitched 15 innings of one-run baseball. He allowed only five hits in that series.
The Cardinals would go on to win the 2006 World Series and earn Jeff Suppan the only ring of his career. Based on his numbers, he should be grateful that he walked away with that one.
Suppan had a second stint with the Royals in 2011. He spent the entire season in Omaha with the Triple ‘A’ team, but at least he can say that he was part of the best farm team in baseball.
