Kansas City Royals All-Time Loss Leaders – Number 5: Bret Saberhagen (78 Losses)

Bret Saberhagen is widely considered to be the best Royals’ pitcher of all time and he certainly has the stats to make the case. If anyone on this list can prove beyond a doubt that win/loss statistics mean virtually nothing it’s Saberhagen.

Saberhagen is a three-time All-Star and a two-time Cy Young award winner, though he never made the All-Star game in the years he won the Cy Young.

He was also the 1985 World Series MVP as he pitched not one, but two complete game victories for the Royals in that series. He gave up just one run in his 18 innings of work. It’s a pretty special time in Royals’ history and is worth watching that final out and celebration:

Saberhagen was traded to the Mets following the 1991 season along with Bill Pecota. PECOTA has had the Royals ever since (Just kidding).

While 1991 wasn’t Saberhagen’s best season, he still posted a very good 3.07 ERA. He also accomplished a feat that a Royals’ pitcher hasn’t matched since. He no-hit the White Sox that season.

In spite of all of his accomplishments and his awards, Saberhagen didn’t get elected to the baseball Hall of Fame. He is however in the Royals’ Hall of Fame and again proves out that making a top-five list of losses doesn’t make him a bad pitcher.
