Round 5 – Pick 26: Maurice Canady, Cornerback (Virginia)

The Chiefs finally address the secondary in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft by selecting Maurice Canady out of Virginia. The need for a starting cornerback isn’t prominent for Kansas City, as they just drafted Marcus Peters last year, and will have Phillip Gaines heading into his third NFL season (assuming Sean Smith isn’t re-signed).

  • What Canady provides for the Chiefs is depth. He had 146 tackles, 26 defended passes, five interceptions, two sacks, and two fumbles in four seasons with the Cavaliers, and could probably jump in for several plays during the season if necessary.

Canady is tall for a cornerback, being listed as 6’1″ on NFL.com’s Draft Tracker, and he has extremely long arms. This is great for anyone defending in the secondary because it helps with knocking passes away.

Canady has played in different spots throughout the secondary, which makes for a solid depth player should Peters, Gaines, or any of the other cornerbacks on the roster go down.

While Canady got completely smoked for six touchdowns during the 2014 season, he stepped his game up in 2015 and showed that he can take criticism and improve. With a coach like Andy Reid, the sky could be the limit for this kid in Kansas City.
