KC Royals: Top Ten Web Gems 2015 Regular Season

Number 5: Dyson Relieves The Crowd
Rays at Royals, July 9th
This mid-season series with the Rays was full of memorable moments. The first two games of the series saw a walk-off grand slam in game one of a double-header and Alex Gordon go 7-9 at the plate.
The city came to a screeching halt the next day as Alex Gordon came up lame chasing down a fly ball to left field. Jarrod Dyson filled in with the wight of a city on his shoulders. This play isn’t making the list, but it’s worth talking about.
Dyson turned a double play from the outfield in the same inning that he filled in for the Royals’ left-fielder. He also hit an inside the park home run to cap the nine runs scored against Chris Archer. He helped show a city and a team that they had the depth to compete.
The very next day, he proved it was no fluke in the first inning.
With no outs and a runner on first base, the Royals fill-in left-fielder made a Willie Mays style basket catch at the wall. He then doubled up the runner at first base for his second double play in two days.
Aside from the general spectacular nature of this play, it meant even more in terms of what it represented. Everyone in the KC area fan-base could take a collective sigh of relief. They were going to be just fine even without their All-Star, Gold Glove winning left-fielder.
Jarrod Dyson was picked to be a breakout candidate for the Royals this season. It could be said that he already broke out it one series against the Rays last year.
