Miguel Almonte

Miguel Almonte made his major league debut in 2015 and it came with mixed results. The upside is definitely there but needs some fine-tuning.

Almonte looks a lot like Yordano Ventura on the mound. He stands slightly taller than Ventura, but both weigh in at a whopping 190 pounds. Both are capable of running their fastballs up near 100 mph and they each have good swing and miss stuff when they’re on.

Almonte may actually turn out to be better than Ventura. In an article for the Kansas City Star, Vahe Gregorian quoted Rene Francisco:

"“This guy is farther along than (Yordano) Ventura at the same stage — throwing the curve ball, throwing the changeup, knowing how to pitch,” he said. “This guy is way more advanced (at the same point) than Ventura. To me.”"

Francisco is the Royals’ Vice-President of International Operations and had a hand in evaluating both Ventura and Almonte.

While Almonte has potential to be a solid rotation piece for the Royals in the future he’s got some work to do. That’s why his walk-out song is “It’s A Long Way To The Top” by AC/DC

The lyrics in the song “Gettin’ beat up, Broken boned, Gettin’ had, Gettin’ took, I tell you folks, It’s harder than it looks” are pretty fitting for Almonte’s debut. He did strike out ten batters in just over eight innings of work, but also gave up four home runs. He’s got promise, but he’s got a long way to go.
