Edinson Volquez

Edinson Volquez took a long time in this league to finally find himself. He did have a good season in 2008 winning 17 games but that seemed to be an anomaly compared to the rest of his career.

When Volquez turned 30 and started playing for the Pirates in 2014 something must’ve clicked for him. He’s now put together consecutive season with an ERA in the threes and has pitched over 190 innings in consecutive seasons.

Volquez is near and dear to the hearts of Royals’ players and fans alike. Aside from his steady efforts throughout the regular season, Volquez stepped it up a notch in the playoffs. His fastball gained velocity and movement that he hadn’t achieved all season. When he started game one of the World Series only hours after his father passed away, he became a rallying point for the Royals. When he pitched game five, he became a legend.

His consistent play throughout the season earned him the nickname “Steady Eddy” Volquez. His nickname is one of the reasons the song “Rock Steady” by Bad Company fits.

The lyrics “Turn on your light and stay with me a while, And ease your worried mind” are fitting for a pitcher that a manager could turn to as a ‘stopper’. The Royals failed to lose five straight games in 2015 and counting on Edinson Volquez to stop a potential losing streak was a big reason why.
