Joakim Soria

For years after Jeff Montgomery’s retirement, the Kansas City Royals struggled to find a viable long-term closer. Mike MacDougal briefly shined, Jeremy Affeldt had a look, Ambiorix Burgos and Ricky Bottalico were terrible, and Roberto Hernandez was 37 years old. Need I go on?

But then…

The Mexicutioner came to save the day!

Acquired through the Rule 5 draft from the Padres in 2006, Joakim Soria put together four stellar years as the Royals closer before struggling in 2011 and requiring Tommy John surgery in 2012.

While he’s not quite the same pitcher he was prior to the surgery, he’s managed to adjust and remain an elite, effective reliever. With departures from Ryan Madson and Franklin Morales (and Greg Holland’s injury), the Royals are brining Soria back to KC for at least the next three years.

As such, it’s only appropriate that Joakim’s walkout music is Thin Lizzy’s “Boys are Back in Town”.

While 2011 wasn’t all that long ago, Soria will enjoy a reunion with many of the Royals core players he shared the field with just a few years back. I also have a feeling he won’t mind some of the other changes that have occurred for the Royals since then.
