Kris Medlen

As a 24-year-old who just came up through the Atlanta Braves organization, Kris Medlin required his first Tommy John surgery late in the 2010 season after experiencing success in both the rotation and relief.

He missed most of the 2011 season, but bounced back quickly the next year, dazzling again in dual roles to the tune of 10-1 with a 1.57 ERA. After a full 2013 campaign, however, Medlin’s 2014 was cut short before it even began.

The Royals signed the two-time TJer to a team-friendly deal prior to the 2015 season, and he was able to return in a semi-successful middle relief role late last year. While he wasn’t the same pitcher as before, he was pitching in the MLB, and he was fairly effective.

For that reason, Kris Medlin’s walk-out song is Aerosmith’s “Back in the Saddle”.

While we don’t know what to expect this year (Long relief? Spot starter? Fifth starter?), we know that Kris Medlin is out there again, and Kansas City Royals fans everywhere are excited about it. If Medlin can get his old curveball back, then perhaps he could mimic his first bounce-back campaign in 2012.
