Offensive line has been the talk of the Kansas City Chiefs’ weaknesses for the past couple seasons, and this season was no different. In 2015, quarterback Alex Smith was sacked 45 times, which ties for the most of his career.

  • Russell Okung, when healthy and on the field, is one of the better tackles in the league, and would help with a offensive line that at times looked to be one of the worst in the league. He will be entering the market after a surgery that occurred during the NFC Championship game against the Panthers.

Having a left tackle like Okung could help quarterback Alex Smith have time in the pocket, and make accurate throws. Right now, Eric Fisher is the left tackle, but after the last few seasons it may be time to move him to right tackle, and bringing Okung on board could help make that happen.

With his reliability due to health a concern, it would be a gamble to bring Okung in and give him a big check. The gamble could pay off though, and he would help improve a run game that is already very efficient.

Free agency can be a game of chances. Sometimes you get something good, sometimes you don’t get what you expected. A two year contract for one of the best left tackles in the game could be the risk that could help the Chiefs.
