Best Seasons in Kansas City Royals History: 6. 1976 (90-72; Won Division, Lost ALCS 3-2)

1976 marked the first year that the Royals would make the playoffs. They won their division for the first time in only the eighth season of the franchise.

1976 was also the year that an icon in Kansas City broke out. George Brett batted .333 during the regular season in 1976 and .444 during the American League Championship Series.

The Royals first playoff appearance started what would turn into a very heated rivalry with the Yankees.

They’d lose to the Yankees three games to two that year. That was when the ALCS was still a best of five affair.

The Royals gave it their best shot. George Brett, then just 23, hit a three-run shot in the eighth inning to tie the game for the Royals.

What happened next would cement Chris Chambliss as a Yankees Legend:

He barely made it around the bases being mobbed by the fans as he rounded second base. The Royals’ dream season was over, but they were just getting started.
