KC Chiefs Focus On Offense In 2016 NFL Mock Draft
Round 7 – Pick 28: Vernon Adams (Quarterback, Oregon)
The Kansas City Chiefs round out their draft by selecting a quarterback, Vernon Adams out of Oregon. It wouldn’t be surprising for Kansas City to draft a quarterback every other draft, and since they took Aaron Murray in 2014, it would mean it’s time to draft another this year.
Adams is the 14th ranked quarterback in this draft, so he’ll likely still be on the board by the time the final round of the draft rolls around. He only started for the Ducks for one season (before that he played with Eastern Washington), but did a nice job in just one season.
Adams had 28 total touchdowns (26 in the air, two with his legs) and over 2,600 yards passing. He’s a threat both in the air, and also not bad on the ground, as proven by his 147 rushing yards last season.
He’s Reid’s kind of guy, with both a strong arm and the ability to run.
The Chiefs currently have Tyler Bray and Aaron Murray sitting behind Alex Smith. Neither guy has taken a snap yet in a regular season game so it could easily be argued that Adams would have a fair shot to be the backup to Smith.
He’s Reid’s kind of guy, with both a strong arm (hold your Smith jokes on this please) and the ability to run. While I don’t see Adams being the immediate backup, he could earn a roster spot for sure and eventually be the backup in the coming years.
Adams is a bit undersized though, and as such, draws comparisons to Russell Wilson. Wilson has turned out to be a great NFL quarterback, but not every Wilson comparison is going to be as good as him.
Adams is a low risk, high reward type of draft pick, and that’s why the Kansas City Chiefs select him with their final pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.
