Round 5 – Pick 23: Connor McGovern (Offensive Guard, Missouri)

With their fifth round pick, the Kansas City Chiefs draft another offensive player, and another offensive lineman. Considered the ninth best guard in the draft, Connor McGovern to the Chiefs made sense for a few different reasons.

  1. The Chiefs had one of the weakest offensive lines in the past two seasons.
  2. He’s a local guy, attending college at Missouri.
  3. Protecting the quarterback is kind of important.

McGovern is one of the strongest linemen in this year’s class, benching over 500 pounds. He moves well during play and has great footwork. He’s also good at zone blocking.

The Chiefs had a carousel of linemen last year due to injuries, and all they can hope to do this offseason is to build some depth. Last year, the team came close to having to throw a tight end or defensive player out on the line, which shows that the lack of depth along the offensive line was scarce.

McGovern is a big guy, is likely familiar with the team already, and was former teammates with current Chiefs center Mitch Morse. Morse was Kansas City’s second round pick just a season ago, so who better to mentor McGovern than a guy who was his teammate just a year ago?

A fifth round pick spent on an offensive guard likely won’t have anyone up in arms. Smith needs better protection, and so far, the Chiefs have gotten him two big guys along the offensive line.
