KC Royals: Remaining Free Agent Outfield Options
By Scott Dillon
Alex Rios: Age 34
Alex Rios didn’t have a good year in 2015, but he still earned a World Series ring.
The Royals have already made a habit of creating reunions with their players this off-season. Alex Rios may not be the best option in right field, but he may not be the worst option either.
Rios already accepted a short-term deal with the Royals to play for a contender. If he wants to add to his postseason hardware, he may be willing to take another short deal. The benefit for the Royals may be that he would cost significantly less than the ten million dollars he required the year prior.
Rios started out the year on a good note before an inside pitch derailed his season. What resulted was a bWAR of -1.1 for the remaineder of 2015.
Alex Rios is going to drive you crazy in the outfield and his lackadaisical approach is enough to make you want to scream
In spite of his poor play for the bulk of the season, Rios managed to come through with some key hits in the postseason. He started a rally in a must-win game against the Astros. He put the Royals ahead for good in the deciding game of the ALDS. He also had some big at-bats against his previous team, the Blue Jays, in the ALCS.
While he was quiet in the World Series, he showed at least some ability to come through in the clutch when it matters the most. Alex Rios is going to drive you crazy in the outfield and his lackadaisical approach is enough to make you want to scream (Guilty). But he does bring playoff experience and success with him (See a full write up on Alex Rios here).
